Nigel the Puma

Nigel the Puma

Who is Nigel?

Nigel, a remarkable puma residing at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park, has become a symbol of resilience and adaptability. His journey to the park began over six years ago when he was rehomed due to an eye condition that threatened his vision. Despite this challenge, Nigel’s spirited nature quickly endeared him to both staff and visitors.

In recent years, Nigel faced another significant health hurdle: severe arthritis in his shoulder. The condition deteriorated to the point where the park’s veterinary team had to make a difficult decision between euthanasia or amputating his affected leg. Choosing the latter to preserve his quality of life, Nigel underwent the operation. Remarkably, he adapted swiftly to his new circumstances, displaying increased activity and a zest for life. Staff observed that he was “the happiest he has ever been” post-surgery.

To further enhance his well-being, Lincolnshire Wildlife Park invested £250,000 in constructing a state-of-the-art enclosure tailored to Nigel’s needs. Unveiled in June 2022, this spacious habitat offers various features designed to stimulate his natural behaviours and provide comfort. The enclosure includes large indoor areas that can be divided, with one section equipped to serve as an on-site medical facility, ensuring Nigel receives prompt and efficient care when necessary.

Visitors to the park have the unique opportunity to engage with Nigel through the “Nigel the Puma Experience.” This interactive session allows guests to feed Nigel treats and learn about his history and daily care from experienced keepers. Participants also receive a behind-the-scenes tour, an exclusive photograph, and a certificate commemorating their close encounter.

For those looking to support Nigel more directly, the park offers an adoption package. Adopters contribute to his ongoing care and receive a pack that includes a unique resin cast of Nigel’s paw, made from a mould taken during his surgery. This exclusive keepsake serves as a tangible connection to Nigel’s inspiring story.

Nigel’s journey from a visually impaired puma facing severe arthritis to a thriving, three-legged ambassador for his species exemplifies the dedication of Lincolnshire Wildlife Park to animal welfare and conservation. His story not only highlights the park’s commitment to providing second chances for animals in need but also offers visitors an inspiring example of resilience and the profound impact of compassionate care.
